Observation Essay Writing TIPS

An observation essay describes an event, work of art (including historical masterpieces, buildings, paintings, etc.), behavior, or process and requires collecting information with all five senses: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory and gustatory. It is like a photograph of a chosen object that intends to describe your experience observing it.

Observation essay writing is about reflecting rather than analyzing. The key to observation essay writing is precise sensory (the most descriptive) language and creating an impression. Plan carefully what, where and when you will observe. Be attentive and make notes to fix your experience. Touch, smell and hear the object(s) whenever possible. Try to find out more. Attempt to create a live atmosphere.

You need to describe what you see, hear, touch, smell and taste: the colors, texture, materials, emotions, cold, heat, pain, pressure, stress, joy, etc. Use various adjectives to be more descriptive and vivid. Retell rather than interpret.

While describing the object(s) observed, try to be objective. Include details but be sure to create a clear big picture and transfer your overall impression of the object, process, and(or) people. Use vivid, descriptive language to help make your narration come alive for the reader. Structure your observation essay in a logical way. You can use a so-called five-sense form to break your observation essay up to address the five senses individually, or you can chronologically relate the observation.

Use the concluding paragraph of your observation essay to provide a general synthesis of what you have just described and to indicate how this experience influenced your learning or thinking.

Examples of observation essay topics include: dinner at home, Statue of Liberty, classroom environment, life of my mother (father, sister, grandfather, etc.), parents teaching their child, poverty, using elevator, observing squirrel in a public park, watching a concert, and visiting a friend.
