Presentation Writing TIPS

Presentation writing requires presenting your ideas in precise and effective manner. The main objective of a presenter is to make everyone enjoy the process and to remember the material offered.

It is proven that effective attention of your audience cannot last more than 20 minutes. Moreover, too much material will not be acquired either. In other words, attention is limited in time and volume. The presenter has to be able to grasp it all and to present the required material before the time of effective attention expires.

Even the driest and boring information can be turned into a dynamic, compelling and easy-to-grasp presentation if the presenter follows the basic rules of presentation writing.

  1. We recommend shaping your presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint and choosing an appropriate design template.
  2. Begin with a clear strategic introduction which explains the purpose of your presentation. A purposeless presentation will never be effective because it is useless to the audience.
  3. Use only one idea per slide.
  4. Don't put every small detail in your presentation. List only the important points. Avoid useless information/visual aids.
  5. Use short titles and the same structure throughout the presentation.
  6. Put ideas (points) instead of text. Use as little text as possible.
  7. Don’t use small fonts.
  8. Use strong colors for important stuff, pastel colors for the unimportant.
  9. Use pictures and video (not much) to ‘fix’ important moments. Label pictures, graph axes, etc. carefully.
  10. Exploit animation with restraint.
  11. Use only one concluding slide, which should be the very last one to save impression. Put the main ideas on it, the ones which people should remember after the presentation.
  12. Spell-check and revise carefully.

Follow the rules while presenting:

  1. Rehearse well in advance. Use cards with main points to guide yourself and make the presentation more smooth and prepared. Work on your public speaking fear with practice. Remember they anyway know less on your topic then you.
  2. Grasp attention on the first slide already and keep the tempo not to lose it. Be enthusiastic.
  3. Guide your audience and make your listeners follow you. Appeal to their brainpower.
  4. Provide a high-level overview first. Then, plunge into the details.
  5. Be sequential. Build a unifying thread between the slides.
  6. Be concise and precise.
  7. Use live examples to demonstrate how it works in reality.
  8. Give people time to think about the important facts by stopping for a moment from time to time.
  9. Use humor but not too much. However, do not use humor improvising.
  10. Don’t expect your audience will remember every detail of your presentation. Your major purpose is to make it remember the main idea.
  11. Do not go overtime under any circumstance.
  12. If you have additional time, let people ask questions. Organize a brief discussion afterwards.
